The successor of the FM changed 3 times throughout the production time:
FM2
Including a new honeycomb patterned titanium shutter with max. speed of 1/4000s and 1/200s flash sync and a new faster silicon photodiode light meter. In contrast to the FM non-AI lenses can no longer be used! Manufactured from March 1982 to 1984.
FM2N
The FM2N got the improved titanium-bladed shutter from the Nikon FE2 (increasing the flash sync to 1/250s) and a new bright focusing screen. The FM2N is recognizable by the red 1/250s on the shutter speed dial and the N serial number prefix. Manufactured from March 1984 to 1989.
FM2N with aluminium bladed shutter
From October 1989 the FM2N got the new aluminium bladed shutter from the F4/F801, it was manufactured until 2001. My pictured camera is out of this 3rd series, recognizable by the shutter blades only. See picture below, the honeycomb blades of the FM2N/FE2 are in front.
