Nikon F Photomic

Nikon F Photomic

In 1962, Nikon comes up with the first Photomic viewfinder for the Nikon F (the body remains more or less the same over the years), which replaced the clip-on selenium meters. This somewhat bulky Photomic is a combination of a prism viewfinder and an external exposure meter with a round CdS measuring cell. A needle in the finder and an additional one on the top of the Photomic displays the correct exposure. There is an ASA dial as well, mechanically coupled with the shutter speed dial.

This Photomic does not meter the light TTL through the lens. Depending on the lens or used filters a manual adjustment is needed. Early models have a little flap that covers the meter when not in use, later models like my camera use an on/off microswitch.

Manufactured from April 1962 to July 1965.

I purchased the pictured camera at a camera store in Phoenix, USA, in November 2003.
According to the serial number it was built between Mai and June 1964.
